This is not a weight loss blog. This is not a body image blog. This is actually a blog that explains all the BENEFITS of fat and what fat does in your body to help you with managing stress, overwhelm, grief and life changing circumstances.
This will either challenge you in your belief systems or, you will be standing and applauding. What I encourage, if you are being challenged is ask yourself why? Why does this challenge you? Whether its beliefs, ethics, way of life? EVERYTHING we practice in life NEEDS to be challenged. That's how we grow into better human beings, that is how we learn and evolve. If our beliefs, our habits, the way we were brought up was never challenged... How far back would we be on the evolutionary scale? When we know better we do better.
Back in the 1980's media and health guru's of the mainstream media launched a campaign that fat was bad for us. Instead they promoted low fat/no fat/diet products. They said "fat was making us fat." If that was true, the obesity epidemic would not be on the rise. Instead people would have gotten thinner. We know in our American society that is not the case. We are getting larger and larger and instead of addressing the problem for what it is, we glorify it. We promote more self love, more body acceptance and we ignore all the associated health risks that follow with not just being overweight, but obesity.
What I want to focus on though is how FAT affects our brain. In my coaching practice it is amazing to me how many women STILL believe fat is bad. They limit it. They avoid it and guess what? One thing they always say is "I get the munchies, I get hungry. I don't know why, it doesn't matter what I eat, come the night time the craving and hunger are real." 70% of the brain is made up of fat. What do you think happens to the brain when you take fat out of your diet? The brain will keep asking and asking and asking for it. You see fat tastes good to us. Fat is actually what keeps us feeling satisfied after we are finished with a meal. If there is no fat in that meal, what do you think is going to happen 30minutes to 2 hours after eating? Your brain is going to tell you that you are hungry again. That you need something to snack on. Your brain is looking for the fat.
Fat is not equal. Our brain requires Omega 3 and Omega 6 in order to function along with many other fats. The body CAN NOT make omega 3. It is a polyunsaturated fat. Poly meaning "many" and unsaturated meaning "double bonds". Omega 6 we get from seeds, oils and nuts. Omega 3 [and this is where I will challenge you]. We get the BEST absorption from animal fats. Not fortified, not added supplements, but from the whole food that we eat. The reason why is basically the "chemical make up". Everything has a positive and negative reaction. When we ADD something to our food, it doesn't necessarily mean it makes it better for us. In fact, it may throw off the balance of that food and make it harder for us to absorb all the nutrients it has to offer. The same thing when we take it away. [Think of it like when you take certain pharmaceuticals, they tell you not to combine with certain foods, or certain supplements, certain drinks. It is the same thing when it comes to our foods]. The end result has left us larger, more stressed, more overwhelmed and even in some they have difficulty remembering day to day. [Insert menopausal symptoms]
Another fat that CAN NOT be replicated or found in plants is DHA. To put it simply DHA is responsible for the white matter in our brain that protects its cells. It protects the blood brain barrier. Also, and this is HUGE. It is responsible for the proper development of the human cortex. Which is responsible for attention, problem solving, critical thinking, decision making. "It has been hypothesized that without DHA, consciousness and symbolic thinking—hallmarks of the human race—would be impossible.“ https://herculeanstrength.com/the-brain-needs-animal-fat/ Vegetarians have 31% lower DHA levels. Vegans have 51% lower.https://chriskresser.com/why-vegetarians-and-vegans-should-supplement-with-dha/comment-page-1/ This generation is the first generation to believe that having a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle on their children is a good thing. In twenty or thirty years we will know either the lasting benefits on our children and what that has done to our society OR we will know the consequences of what that lifestyle had on now adults... My theory, if developing children and adolescent brains are not getting the appropriate amount of DHA, Omega 3 and Omega 6, our critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and ability to make quick decisions in stressful moments will decrease.

FAT IS NOT MAKING YOU FAT. When it is the correct fat. This is why I am soooo passionate when coaching my clients who are stuck in grief, trauma, or overwhelm that we do look at their nutrition and that we DO figure out how THEIR body likes to eat vs what we "believe" or what we have been told. The diet industry is huge and every month it seems there is a "new healthier" way of eating. There are three things I know for sure.
Even plant eating animals are not vegan/vegetarian. They are eating the worms, the living bacteria on the plants, and soil. They are eating the grasshoppers that are to slow, the moths, ants and any other "bug" that is on that plant. Insects have EXTREMELY high levels of and are extremely balanced in their "fat" https://www.edibleinsects.com/insect-nutrition-information/
When a person STOPS eating how the "fads" tells them to eat and instead start diving in, reconnecting with their body and starts "hearing" what the body is whispering, weight loss happens if it needs to happen. Weight is gained if it needs to happen. Pain decreases, brain fog lifts, the feelings of grief, trauma, overwhelm start becoming manageable and a person is able to prioritize and problem solve so much easier.
Including HEALTHY animal fat in a persons diet DOES lower dementia type diseases... This makes sense to me because what is on the rise right now? Diabeties, obesity which all have a link to Alzheimer's/dementia diseases [As referenced above the no fat, low fat diets contributed to] https://www.dementia.org.au/sites/default/files/helpsheets/Helpsheet-DementiaQandA07-WhatYouEatAndDrinkAndYourBrain_english.pdf If you would like to know more one of my amazing teachers I had the privileged to train under and has had many studies done has this book https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/the-bodyenergy-longevity-prescription-how-craniosacral-therapy-helps-prevent-alzheimers-and-dementia-while-improving-your-quality-of-life/9408885/#edition=8758573&idiq=29730350
My goal in my coaching practice has ALWAYS been to help people move through their difficult times instead of avoiding, or being stuck in those trying times. In order for clients to be successful they need to be willing to be challenged. To think and do things differently. After all, it is doing the same thing over again that got them to where they are. The first step is to ALWAYS stir up the soil your roots are in and that starts with knowing how your nutrition affects not only your body, but your brain in the long term. Our bodies need a variety of healthy fats in order to get us through times of trauma and grief, as well us to ensure that we DO age well.
