Have you ever felt like life’s weight is just a bit too much? Like the grief, trauma, or those massive life changes have left you feeling disconnected from yourself? I get it. I’ve been there too. And honestly, the path to feeling whole again isn’t always clear. But here’s the thing: wellness isn’t just about eating right or hitting the gym. It’s a rich, layered experience made up of many parts working together. Today, I want to take you on a journey through the core wellness elements that can help you reclaim your vitality and build a balanced, hopeful life.
Understanding the Core Wellness Elements
When I first started exploring wellness, I thought it was all about physical health. Boy, was I wrong! Wellness is so much more than that. It’s about nurturing every part of yourself - mind, body, and spirit. The core wellness elements are like the pillars holding up your well-being. If one pillar is weak or missing, the whole structure feels shaky.
So, what are these core wellness elements? They include physical health, emotional balance, social connections, intellectual growth, spiritual peace, environmental awareness, occupational satisfaction, and financial stability. Each one plays a unique role in how we feel day-to-day. And here’s a little secret: focusing on just one or two won’t cut it. You need a holistic approach.
For example, I remember a time when I was physically healthy but emotionally drained. No amount of exercise could fix that. It was only when I started addressing my emotional health and social connections that I began to feel whole again. This is why understanding and nurturing all the core wellness elements is so crucial.

What are the 8 elements of wellness?
Let’s break down these 8 elements a bit more because knowing them is the first step to making real changes.
Physical Wellness
This is about taking care of your body through exercise, nutrition [not what some guru or fad told you but what your genetics, and custom nutrition plan has shown and proven to you work. You can't argue DNA needs], sleep, and regular wholistic and medical check ups.. It’s the foundation, but not the whole story.
Emotional Wellness
Ever feel overwhelmed by your feelings? Emotional wellness means understanding and managing your emotions, coping with stress, and seeking help when needed. Whether that is from family, friends, a therapist, a coach, mentor or strategist.
Social Wellness
Humans are social creatures. Building and maintaining healthy relationships can provide support and a sense of belonging. Sometimes easier said than done, but when you are living in your true identity and desires, that does become easier.
Intellectual Wellness
This involves engaging your mind through learning, creativity, and problem-solving. We stop learning new things and we stop evolving and growing. It keeps your brain sharp and curious.
Spiritual Wellness
Whether through religion, meditation, or personal reflection, spiritual wellness helps you find purpose and meaning.
Environmental Wellness
Our surroundings impact us more than we realize. Creating a safe, healthy, and inspiring environment is key. In one of my sessions, I teach clients how they can start decluttering the brain just by doing simple things around the home to create calm.
Occupational Wellness
Finding satisfaction and enrichment in your work or daily activities contributes to overall happiness.
Financial Wellness
Managing your finances wisely reduces stress and helps you feel secure about the future. Money can be scary to some. Yet when we take our hand off our money, when we don't know how our money is working for us, it can cause a lot of stress. Make friends with your money.
Each element is interconnected. For instance, financial stress can affect emotional wellness, and a toxic environment can harm physical health. Recognizing these links helps us approach wellness in a balanced way.
Why These Elements Matter More Than Ever
When life throws curveballs like trauma or grief, these core wellness elements can feel out of reach. I remember feeling lost after a major loss, unsure how to even start healing. But focusing on these elements gave me a roadmap.
Take emotional wellness, for example. It’s tempting to push feelings aside, but acknowledging and working through them is vital. I found journaling and therapy to be lifesavers. And social wellness? Reaching out to friends or support groups made a huge difference. You don’t have to do this alone.
Physical wellness also plays a surprising role. Even gentle movement like walking or yoga helped me reconnect with my body and release tension. And don’t underestimate spiritual wellness - finding moments of peace and purpose helped me see beyond the pain.
The beauty of these elements is that they empower you to take small, manageable steps. Maybe today it’s a short walk, tomorrow a phone call to a friend, and the next day a quiet moment of reflection. It’s about progress, not perfection.

Practical Tips to Embrace the Core Wellness Elements
So, how do you start weaving these elements into your life? Here are some practical, doable tips that helped me and might help you too:
Physical Wellness:
- Start small: a 10-minute walk or stretching session. Discomfort is ok when starting new things.
- Prioritize sleep by setting a consistent bedtime. Routine is crucial to teach our brain how to sleep
- Nourish your body with simple, wholesome foods. Know which foods those are, even the healthy ones sometimes can cause harm if your chemistry does not react well to them.
Emotional Wellness:
- Practice mindfulness or meditation to stay present. Take the moments. Pause. Notice. Feel.
- Write down your feelings in a journal. Often I tell clients ot keep an audio journal if they are not writers.
- Don’t hesitate to seek professional support. Whether that is a counsellor, a doctor, a coach, a strategist, mentor. All of those bring different pieces to the equation.
Social Wellness:
- Reach out to someone you trust, even if it’s just a text. Often in the thick of it we do not think to do so. Know that you are not a burden by reaching out.
- Join a community group or class that interests you. Group counselling can be amazing. Hearing experiences from others to validate that what you are feeling/experiencing is not crazy.
- Set boundaries to protect your energy. Know the difference between healthy boundaries and unhealthy boundaries.
Intellectual Wellness:
- Read a book or listen to a podcast on a topic you love. When healing sometimes our attention span and short term memory is affected. Start small. A real, a short audio book.
- Try a new hobby or skill. Go back to what you used to enjoy as a kid. Often, we discover a light in us we forgot existed.
- Engage in puzzles or brain games. I personally enjoy the "edgeless" puzzles. [all others must die lol]
Spiritual Wellness:
- Spend time in nature, even if just a few minutes.
- Explore meditation or prayer. Attend your prefered faith community. There is refreshment when gathered together.
- Reflect on what gives your life meaning. Does what you believe still bring you peace or do you need to begin changing in order to reclaim your peace?
Environmental Wellness:
- Declutter a small space to create calm.
- Add plants or natural elements to your home. Elements of Wellness strives to bring all of the earths elements into its spaces.
- Spend time outdoors regularly.
Occupational Wellness:
- Identify what you enjoy about your work or daily tasks.
- Set realistic goals and celebrate small wins.
- Consider volunteering if work feels overwhelming.
Financial Wellness:
- Create a simple budget to track income and expenses.
- Set small savings goals.
- Seek advice if managing money feels stressful.
Remember, it’s okay to take one step at a time. Wellness is a journey, not a race.
